Identifying Strange Sounds Your Car Is Making

Posted May 05, 2014 by Ken Kupchik

To make sure your car is running smoothly, it's important to turn the radio down occasionally to listen for any unusual sounds it might be making. You'd be surprised at how many car owners neglect to perform this basic check. While we strongly recommend you take your vehicle to an automotive professional if you hear any unusual noises, the following is a general guide for what you might encounter.

A loud abnormal sound when pressing the gas / revving the engine

The most likely cause of this sound is a hole, or a leak somewhere in your exhaust system. While very frequently it's the muffler that needs replacing, it can be anything from a gasket to a y-pipe.

A clunking under the vehicle when you go over a bump

The most likely cause of a clunking sound when going over a bump is an issue with your shocks or suspension system, but could also be coming from a part of your exhaust system being loose.

Squealing sounds when you put your foot on the break

A squealing sound when using your breaks is an indicator that you may need to replace your break pads. Your break system is not something to take lightly, so bring your car to a mechanic as soon as possible.

You hear a rhythmic sound coming from your tires when you're driving

Your tires may need to be balanced, inflated properly, replaced, or you may need get an alignment.

There is a high pitched squeal when you start your car that goes away as soon as you turn the engine off.

The typical cause of a high pitched squeal is a belt that may need to be adjusted or replaced. In some cases, the squeal will go away after the car has been running, or may only be present when you turn the wheel.

The engine idles in an offbeat way/doesn't idle properly

The most likely cause for this, is the engine misfiring. You may need a tune up and have the spark plugs adjusted/replaced. You may also need to replace the spark plug wires.

When taking a curve, you hear a humming sound

This type of sound indicates that your wheel bearings may be wearing and need replacement.

You hear a hissing noise coming from under the hood

Unless you you are transporting cobras, a hissing noise under your hood is most likely a vacuum leak, meaning a vacuum line may be damaged. It may need to be attached, or replaced.

Knocking sound coming from the engine

Engine "knock" is caused by not using the proper octane gasoline. Make sure you check your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's recommendations.

The engine makes a clicking noise while idling

This could mean that your valves need adjusting but could also be an indicator that the oil pressure is low or that the engine is low on oil.

Again, we strongly recommend that you take your vehicle to an automotive professional immediately if you hear any strange noises as they will be able to properly diagnose and repair your car, avoiding any potential safety risks.
