How to Save on Gas
Saving Gas: A few things to consider
Make small changes in motoring habits to improve fuel consumption and lower costs.
- Even on the coldest morning your car only needs 30 to 45 seconds to warm up.
- Avoid wasting fuel by not revving your engine. Revving washes oil down from the inside cylinder walls which results in a loss of oil pressure.
- Statistics show buying gas on Wednesdays saves money.
- Stop filling the gas tank after you hear that first click. When you overfill, gas pours out of the tank.
- Purchase gas at least three days prior to a holiday to avoid inflated prices at the pump.
- Gas is at its densest during the cooler times of day (early morning and late evening). Gas prices are based on the volume of measurement.
- Traveling the speed limit gives you better gas mileage. Speeding can use up to 45 percent more fuel.
- Keep windows closed when driving on the highway. Open windows causes air drag reducing your gas mileage up to 10 percent.
- Maintain a consistent speed whenever possible. Continuously changing your speed wastes fuel.
- Driving on dirt or gravel roads can reduce your gas mileage by 30 percent and damage your car.
- Reversing uses more gas. Always park so you can drive forward when leaving.
- Look for the shortest, straightest route while traveling. Going around corners and constantly switching lanes uses extra gas.
- Keep your car clutter-free. Removing excess weight from your back seat and trunk will give you better gas mileage.
- Check air pressure of tires weekly; each tire should be filled to the maximum limit and periodically balanced.
- Carpool whenever possible. Not only will it
help the environment, it will help keep money in your pocket.
