After pumping gas, car won't start....
submitted by Som-E
I have Kia optima 2004 and I just bought a used one recently and It won't start after I pump some gas in... I takes awhile to start the car... I need to push accelerate for few times and try to hold the keys few seconds then it will turn on...and after that it is totally fine... I have no idea what is wrong with it but my friends say I need to take it to the shop of something... Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my car? and if I need to get it fixed how much do you think it will cost?

david,
this sounds more like an electrical problem possibly in the ignition switch.

dale,
Hello, You might be happy with this answer you might not. The problem sounds like you car is in "vapor lock". This is common in some models. You do need to take it too a dealer, sometimes the co. has a quick fix.

david,
no not realy there is no such thing as vapor lock. Ofcourse a 04 kia is going to be fuel injected, and any fuel injected vehicle is going to have a high pressure pump, which will push the the fuel to the motor
Parker,
I also recommend checking your spark plugs. Old spark plugs can sometimes cause this problem.

Bob,
Typically, starting issues are related to the battery/starter. However, if you are solving the problem by pumping the accelerator..... then I would assume that you have a blockage in your fuel system or fuel pump needs repair. I would take it to a verified shop and tell them to diagnose your fuel system.

Som-E,
how much do you think it will cost? and do I have to go to Kia shop or any shops?
Jamie,
It sounds to me like your vehicale might be getting to hot, i would try a coolant flush or a thermostat change, when feul gets hot it wont start your car like normal it may take a few cranks. you can do this for around $100. give it a try...
