Could I have an electrical problem with my Dodge Grand Caravan?
submitted by Margaret
I have a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan, and a week ago I noticed the lights going from dim to bright as I drove. Yesterday the battery light came on while I was driving during the day. Then last night, after taking the car for a short drive, the lights became dimmer and the engine sounded as if it was going to stop....which it eventually did. My battery was only 2 years old...so the place I purchased it from pro-rated the price of a new one for me. I installed the new one and drove 30 miles on it, when I pulled into a parking spot and the car stalled, as if the battery had died again. I jump started the car, and it started up but quickly stalled out again, after I turned the head lights on. I think there's something electrically wrong with it. Does anyone have any answers regarding this problem?

Jamie ,
It sounds like your alternator is not charging the battery. First thing to do is charge the battery or jump start the car again. Then you have to hook a volt meter to the positive and negative of the battery. When the car is at idle the battery should read between 13 volts and 14 volts. If you see the volts go below 12 and it keeps going down then you need a new alternator. If you turn your light on when trying this it should drop faster. Good luck...
