5 Modifications That Will Increase Your Car's Value

Posted September 02, 2014 by Ken Kupchik

Many vehicle modifications drop the resale value of your vehicle, as we covered in a recent article. However, there are some modifications that will help you when it comes time to resell your car. While it's important to remember that you probably won't get your money back on modifications dollar-for-dollar, the following additions will make your car more attractive to potential buyers when that time comes:

1) Navigation system - An in-dash navigation system is a definite plus for people looking looking to buy a car, and will undoubtedly help your resale value. Ideally, you'll want the system to appear as uniform with the rest of the car's dashboard as possible, so that it blends in naturally and doesn't look like an upgrade.

2) Remote car-starter - Remote car starters are incredibly popular, especially in extremely hot, or extremely cold climates. They are relatively inexpensive, not terribly difficult to install, and are a nice bonus for prospective car buyers. While it likely won't get you much extra money, it's an extra feature that most car shoppers will appreciate.

3) Satellite Radio - The popularity of satellite radio has boomed in recent years as many leading radio personalities such as Howard Stern have migrated to a satellite-only format. While many new cars come with satellite radio built-in, adding it to your vehicle will not only offer you another entertainment option during your commute, but will be a great selling-point when it comes time for you to upgrade.

4) Properly-sized alloy wheels - While putting 20-inch chrome wheels on your car probably won't draw the most buyers, replacing your hubcaps with alloy wheels that are either made by the manufacturer for that model, or look similar enough so as not to look ostentatious will boost your car's value. Make sure to consider whether or not the wheels would be considered attractive by most buyers before spending the money.

5) Factory leather seats - There is no denying that leather is a major selling point for cars. Yes, there are those few who claim to not like leather, but it's an absolute net positive when it comes to vehicle value, and resale value. If you take the time to upgrade your leather seats, and upholstery, make sure that they are either manufacturer factory-installed, or if they are aftermarket products, that they are appropriate and will look genuine.
