Motorcycle Helmet Laws State By State

Different states have different motorcycle helmet laws. We came up with a comprehensive list that will show you the helmet requirements broken down by state. The following is a list of who is required to wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle, based on universal state laws. 

Alabama                   all riders

Alaska                     age 17 and younger 

Arizona                    age 17 and younger 
 
Arkansas                 age 20 and younger

California                  all riders

Colorado                  age 17 and younger riders and passengers

Connecticut             age 17 and younger 

Delaware                 age 18 and younger 

District of Columbia     all riders 

Florida                    age 20 and younger 

Georgia                  all riders

Hawaii                    age 17 and younger

Idaho                     age 17 and younger

Illinois                    no helmet laws

Indiana                   age 17 and younger 

Iowa                       no helmet laws

Kansas                  age 17 and younger

Kentucky               age 20 and younger 

Louisiana               all riders

Maine                    age 17 and younger

Maryland               all riders

Massachusetts      all riders

Michigan               age 20 and younger 

Minnesota             age 17 and younger

Mississippi            all riders

Missouri                all riders 

Montana               age 17 and younger 

Nebraska              all riders

Nevada                 all riders 

New Hampshire     no law

New Jersey           all riders

New Mexico          age 17 and younger 

New  York             all riders

North Carolina       all riders 

North Dakota          age 17 and younger

Ohio                      age 17 and younger

Pennsylvania         age 20 and younger

Rhode Island         age 20 and younger

*Note that this list can potentially change as new laws can be passed and old laws repealed, so it's important to verify the laws yourself before embarking on a ride. 

**Also note that some states will have laws requiring an insurance rider for any rider that chooses not to wear a helmet.
