Overall a great place to go. I wouldn't take my car anywhere else. That said, they WILL up-charge you signifcantly to change your engine and cabin air filter. The guy said that to change a cabin air filter, it takes 30 minutes to access the filter itself, thus necessitating a charge of $50 for parts and labor. I knew that was patently false, as it can be easily accessed on my vehicle (2013 Accord) through the glove compartment, which unhinges without any tools. I bought the same cabin air filter from NAPA auto parts for $15 and installed it myself. Essentially the same speech was given for the engine air filter, and I did the same thing. BLUF: Know about how much something should cost and how easy the job is to do it.

EARLS AUTO REPAIR

17287 JEFF DAVIS HWY, Dumfries

My car was towed to Earl's on Saturday before Labor Day, because the fan belt broke and the steering was frozen. I had just gotten my car inspected by another shop and it passed. Due to the holiday. Earl called and told me on the next Tuesday that I needed a fan belt and an air compressor for the air conditioning unit, and did not mention anything else. I asked if he could get a used part, so it would be less expensive. He said that would be fine. We discussed him going to one of the local auto parts store to buy it. He quoted me a price of just under $300, which I assumed was a good price. He said I could pay with a check. But, when I arrived at his shop, he said he would not take my check since the branches were not right in the neighborhood; he also did not take credit cards. (That should have been my first red flag.) So I offered to drive to an ATM to get him cash. He agreed. As soon as I turned on the engine, the engine light came on. When I asked him about it and he said that it was normal for cars to have the engine light come on. I said "no" I did not think that was right, and that there must be something else wrong with the car. He began to rank and yell at me and said that he was right and I was wrong! He had NO customer service skills! Also, he told me I had a large oil leak, which no other mechanic told me about. So, I was upset even more. But, I gave him the cash and told him I did not feel safe driving a car this way. The next day , I brought the car to another repair shop who informated me that the compressor was defective. It shorted out the fuse. When I called Earl to ask him for the reciept for the part, he yelled at me and said he as done with all this woman stuff! He then hung up the phone in my ear. DO NOT GO TO THIS MAN TO GET YOUR CAR REPAIRED. It will come out worse than when it went in!
