American Transmission

I will be as objective as possible in this review. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt whenever possible, but I cannot do so with reviewing this transmission shop. I was planning on taking my 2000 Honda Odyssey to Portland to have a rebuilt transmission put in. The total cost around $1,600, and would be completed within 24 hours. I saw an ad for free transmission check-up and diagnostic at American Transmissions in Longview, WA. Since it was close, I went there. They had it for most of a day, but did not call me back. I finally went back in and Duane Todd, the owner/manager, pulled a bait and switch on me. I said the problem could be fixed for around $600-800, and that I wouldn't need a complete rebuilt most likely. since that was at most half of what I was going to pay for the replacement, I made the mistake of leaving it with them. My experience with this shop would take an entire book if I gave all the details, so I'll summarize. Once the transmission was taken apart, I was told I would need $2800 worth of services. I told him to throw it back together and I'd take it down to Portland, but he refused to do so. I was getting upset about the bait and switch, so he started coming down on the price. We settled on $2100. The next three weeks held continue frustration with dishonesty, and blatant lies, particularly when the owner would promise to get right back with me, and generally would not. Repeatedly I had to come into town to get information and elicit specific time goals. None of which, not a single one, were ever met. Now admittedly, the shop had too much work, too few mechanics, and a horrible shop environment. The employees were unhappy, and made no bones about it. One threatened to quit and go home right in front of me when the lady in the office told one of them my transmission had to be put together within 24 hours. In fact, since then, three employees have quit, including Mr. Todd's brother. One employee quit after not even one day while my minivan was there. Ultimately, after 3 and a half weeks, I finally got my vehicle back. It promptly leaded transmission fluid for the next 3 weeks. When I reported the problem back to Mr. Todd 3 times, he said it was normal to have overflow out of the overflow valve. I am quite sure every transmission job does NOT lead fluid for weeks on end, so I finally came in to the shop of horrors with dread. One of the mechanics, no longer there, checked the fluid and said it was several quarts overfull, even after 3 weeks of leaking. He said that after filling it, he had left the cap off and the spout in, and the other mechanic must have filled it also, putting double the fluid into the transmission. I know that would be very bad for an engine, but I'm not sure about a transmission, but I can't be good to have that extra pressure. The mechanic pumped a bunch of fluid out and sent me on my way. It kept leaking, so I brought it in again. Now there was far too little fluid...he had pumped too many quarts out. They finally found that the plug was in crooked and that was the source of 4 weeks of staining everyone's concrete where I parked. Since then, there have been some issued with the shifting, but not enough to ever walk into that shop again. It was the worst, unbelievably bad automotive service shop I have ever seen in my 35 years of driving. Please save yourself grief and money and go to another shop. A+ Transmissions were recommended as a good shop, but I have no first hand experience with them. Good luck!

Got my 2008 Audi A-4 s-line fixed. After I bought it from coparts, had all the body work and repair done at Alpina auto, since I'm friends with the owner. Great job, only the check engine light kept coming on, and every time they scanned it, it came back with an EVAP code. Called Nazier, who was kind and patient, and I dropped off my car to see if they could figure it out. I had read so many amazing reviews online that claimed he had the best prices, and does the best work. 2 days later, got a call from Jared, who said they found the problem and ordered a part to replace the Evap hose, which was cracked. Price was $383 for part+installation. Seemed a bit pricey, and I had originally done a 3 star review, but Nazier called me and explained why it cost me that much and he really gave me the best deal he could find. Offered to give me a free oil change anytime. Nobody cares more about preserving business, keeping a sterling reputation, and maintaining customer satisfaction more than these guys do. I recommend them to anyone.

DO NOT let the mechanics who work at this place touch your car. I never write reviews but I feel like everyone needs to know this place employs literal scumbags. I had the starter replaced on my car a few weeks ago by their mechanic Matt. He came to where I worked, swapped it out, and I was satisfied. Well, next morning I go to drive to work and my car overheats while driving down I5. Turns out the hose that runs from the radiator to the engine snapped off the radiator which was directly above where you would need to work when swapping out the starter. Coincidence? Yeah I don't think so one bit, it was literally the MORNING AFTER they replaced the starter. I get it towed back and I call McFarlands. They say they wont have a mechanic available until Monday (starter was replaced Thursday afternoon, car overheated Friday morning). I say that's fine, I understand things happen. I also ask over the phone if they are going to reimburse me for my tow bill. The woman tells me only if the car overheating was a direct cause of something their mechanic did. That's fair obviously, however it was no coincidence that this issue happened less than 12 hours after their mechanic was working on my car, but okay. So they schedule the same mechanic, Matt, to come out to my house Monday and figure out what happened. Monday rolls around, he shows up and checks out my car. Like I said the hose had snapped off the radiator and therefore caused the engine to overheat. He tells me that and I think okay, well obviously this isn't some freak coincidence, you snapped off the hose while swapping my starter, accident or not. Since there's obviously no way I can prove it was his fault (not like I was recording him on camera the whole time he was fixing my car on Thursday) he tells me he can't fix it for free and I still have to pay the $125 fee for them to come out to my house. So basically if I wanted it to be fixed, I would have to buy a whole new radiator, reschedule him to come out and then have him fix it. So we're talking around $250+ NOT including the tow bill AND not including all the days of work I have to miss because of something this dude did lmao. This is where it gets even better! Matt tells me that he "feels bad for me" and that if I buy the radiator (still a $100 part that I should not have had to buy in the first place) that he will come sometime after work/on the weekend and put it in for me for free since it's really not a hard swap to do on my car. I think well this is the best I'm going to get out of the situation, and I say okay and get his number. I order the radiator and it comes a few days later and I call him. He picks up the phone and we agree that he can come over on Saturday and swap it out for me. Saturday rolls around and take a wild guess what happens? He doesn't show up. I call him, and since now he obviously knows my number from when I previously called him, he doesn't answer. I call him the next day. No answer. I call him a few days after that. No answer. Yup, this dude is a garbage human being and I am shocked anyone would ever employ this guy. So like I said, avoid this place at all costs. There's several mobile mechanics in this area. PLEASE spend your money elsewhere.

Unprofessional and unreliable at best. Dave has absolutely no idea what is going on in his shop. I approved work on January 29th 2015. I was told I would have my vehicle back by the 6th of February. I stopped by on the 6th and was told they had not even ordered parts. It is now the 13th and I do not have my vehicle back. The company never returns phone calls and I have to go in to get any information. Also, I was told February 11th via email that my quote has just gone up $829. They did not do a proper inspection of the transmission when it was pulled apart and missed several items until it was time to reassemble. The extra money doesn't bother me. The inability to communicate properly and their arrogance is what gets me.

NOTHING was done correctly. The distributor they took 4 days to put in ended up failing. The “high performance” control module that I bought for the distributor, they promised me was in the car was NOT in the new distributor. It was kept. The distributor WASNT tightened down and you could move it by hand. The valve covers were replaced which I didn’t NOT agree to. They leaked onto the exhaust manifold AFTER I got the car back. That was one of the jobs they recommended they should fix. They just charged me for new valve covers apparently because I ended up with a lot oil on my exhaust that had to be cleaned off again. And I paid another mechanic to do all of this work after I was over charged for the labor. 1200 I paid for basically nothing to be done right and a part to not be returned to me that I was lied to about being in my engine. I won’t be bringing my car back to Arthur’s. And I didn’t not like the response of the guy at the front desk when I told him about this.

Tom Dwyer Automotive Service, Inc. is a full-service automotive facility. That’s rare today in a market where profit drives shops to specialize, avoiding the responsibility of maintaining your whole vehicle. While a brake shop looks only at your brakes and a muffler shop won’t touch your transmission, we have the equipment and knowledge to take care of all your vehicle needs. This lets you spend your hard-earned money more wisely, because it may not make sense to do an expensive repair on one system of your vehicle when another failure is lurking in another system. Only by caring for your vehicle as a whole can we provide the sensible vehicle support you need for the long term. From a simple alignment to complex computer control problems, you will always receive superior care at Tom Dwyer Automotive Service, Inc.
